"Relative to much of the skin of the human body, the fingertips have a high concentration of nerve endings, equipping them as centers of tactile sensation" (source ). Much like the fingers, a person's sexual organs carry a high volume of nerve endings, which are responsible for the degree of pleasure or pain a person may physically experience. Because of the relation the fingers and genitalia share in terms of being loaded with nerve endings, we could correlate the "tactile sensation" with sexual feeling, even if only marginally. These two nerve ending centers are the brain's best receptors of pleasurable or painful experiences. If an object is pleasurable to touch, that's recorded as "positive", and thus repeated because it feels 'good'. The process works the opposite for pain; humans tend to avoid experiences which are negative and painful (speaking in very general psychological terms). If the Wii Remote feels really good to touch, hold, and so forth, a person will likely want to repeat the experience. Which means play more with his/her Wii. Which could mean buying new games. Which means more money for Nintendo. You see where this is going. Granted, the sexual sensation of Wii won't be entirely conscious. Again, it's the conditioning of pleasurable feeling towards the controller that will subconsciously create a sexual connection. Humans, as should be known by now, have a sex drive. Whether or not companies should use that sexuality to their advantage is another issue, one I'll address shortly. For the moment, just note that the force of sexuality is present in Wii's physical design. Putting aside Bernal's argument, is Nintendo justified in the implicit sexuality present in Wii's design? Well, understand that Nintendo is a business partly dependent on market trends. Right now, small, sexy technology is generally desired, especially in Nintendo's homeland, Japan. It's hard to fault the company for doing what's necessary to stay competitive. Furthermore, how many buyers are really going to complain about their system looking aesthetically nice, or their controllers feeling pleasurable to hold and use? This is cache, read story here |
