Thanks to the continued dearth of female rappers, Psalm One has already earned plenty of buzz and seems primed to make a national impact. (Urb magazine as well as all the Chicago papers seem to think so, anyway.) Thankfully, she's the real deal with smart, savvy rhymes that don't rely on novelty or party-girl sexuality to make a point.
"The Death of a Frequent Flyer" hit stores Tuesday, and her local CD-release show is set for Friday at the Entry with DJ Spontaneous, Doomtree, Mac Lethal, Longshot and DJ Plain Ole Bill. After that, she'll hit the road with Atmosphere for a tour of the West Coast and Canada that wraps up with two nights at First Avenue on Sept. 29 and 30.
The annual sale takes over Calhoun Square Friday through Sunday. Thousands of new and used CDs, LPs and movies will be for sale, with proceeds benefiting Clare Housing, a local charity that helps provide housing for those with HIV/AIDS. There's live music, too, with Dan Israel, the House of Mercy Band and Ellis performing Saturday afternoon.
From there, Dan Israel heads over to the , a free show at Grumpy's Northeast with more than two dozen acts on the bill, including Charlie Parr, Martin Devaney, Paul Metsa, High on Stress, Alicia Corbett, the Brass Kings and Calamity Jean.
While the officially started Wednesday, it kicks into high gear today with three days and nights of jam bands playing in the blazing sun near Detroit Lakes. The main stage headliners play two sets each night, with the String Cheese Incident tonight, Phil Lesh and Friends on Friday and Trey Anastasio wrapping it all up Saturday. Between games of Frisbee golf (the site includes a professional nine-hole course), fans can also catch O.A.R., the Mutayor, Railroad Earth and Papi Mali today; a Keller Williams/String Cheese Incident collaboration, Umphrey's McGee, Great American Taxi and Shooter Jennings on Friday; and Medeski, Martin & Wood, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, the Big Wu and the Wood Brothers on Saturday.
Singer/songwriter is out on his first acoustic tour, playing his old favorites as well as tracks from his upcoming third studio album, "Nightcrawler" (due in stores Aug. 15). His Saturday-night gig at the Varsity is sold out, but he'll also be stopping by the Electric Fetus that afternoon for a free in-store that'll be recorded and then later sold as a limited-edition CD available only at that store. Cool, huh?
- the loudest, heaviest stoner-rock rockers to ever come out of Austin, Texas - return to town Saturday for a show at the Quest's Ascot Room. They're back out in support of their ace debut, "Age of Winters," and have the similar-minded group Saviours along for the ride.
Minneapolis-based Sprout Press hosts its fourth annual tonight at Mario's Keller Bar. The cover-song contest will feature JG Everest, Charley Dush, Bernie the Trailer Park Queen, members of the Bill Mike Band, the Roe Family Singers, the Dad in Common, the House of Mercy Band, Hondo and the Gilded Age. A panel of judges that includes Lori Barbero and Bill Batson will pick the winner, with the audience weighing in with its own choice. After that, Big Trouble plays a full-length set.
Former Pioneer Press music scribe has a new disc, "Sink and/or Swim," out under his nom de band the Mad Ripple. His first of two CD-release shows is an all-ages acoustic gig Wednesday at the Bryant-Lake Bowl (with help from Slim Dunlap), with a full-band show set July 28 at the 400 Bar.
