Chris Somers xxy, an Australian intersexed activist having an xxy chromosome identity, has persuaded the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to accept people who are known as biologically intersexed or androgynous and do not feel comfortable in declaring themselves to be either male or female, to be able to reveal their true identity as intersexed or androgynous in the upcoming 2006 census.

However, the ABS office has no plans of reprinting the already printed census forms, citing budgetary constraints. Instead, those wishing to take advantage of the rule change will need to write in “intersexed” or “androgynous in the question about gender.

"The ABS has no intention to force or coerce respondents to lie about their sex,” stated Dave Nauenburg, Director in charge of the census, who was speaking on behalf of Dennis Trewin, a CEO of the ABS.
